Since the inception of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have consistently impressed with their performance and excellence. With five championships and numerous playoff appearances, they have never failed to reach the finals in consecutive seasons. However, the 2025 season has taken an unexpected turn, as CSK not only fell out of the playoff race but also faced the risk of finishing at the bottom of the points table for the first time.
The disappointment from 2024 continued into 2025, culminating in a six-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi. Head coach Stephen Fleming did not hide his frustration during the post-match press conference, stating that their performance this season reflects their position in the standings. He emphasized the need for improvement to showcase the team's true potential.
With just two weeks left before being eliminated from playoff contention, CSK's remaining matches became mere formalities. Nevertheless, the franchise began to give opportunities to younger players, keeping an eye on the future. Fleming insisted that despite the playoff chances being over, the team's focus and morale remained intact. He expressed a desire to finish the season with at least one strong performance.
One of the major issues for CSK this season has been their batting. The team's inability to score runs during the powerplay in the early matches and a lack of intent throughout the innings have posed significant challenges. Although the inclusion of young players has injected some energy into the batting lineup, several flaws remain evident. Young talents like Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis have sparked hope for the future, but they require more support from the rest of the batting order.
In addition to batting woes, CSK's bowling has also failed to meet expectations this season. Key fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who has been crucial for the team in recent years, has struggled with an economy rate exceeding ten. His new bowling action and lack of control have put him in a tough spot. However, Fleming refrained from criticizing Pathirana, noting that he is not at the level he or the team desires but is gradually returning to form. Batters are beginning to understand him better, so he needs to strengthen his strategy.
